Catherine A. Potthast represents clients in the Baltimore, Maryland, metropolitan area and in Maryland State and Federal courts.  She handles legal issues related to insurance law, which includes appellate practice, toxic tort matters, flood, water damage and property damage, wind damage, roofing claims, mold claims, lead paint, environmental matters, insurance coverage defense, personal injury defense, and lead paint defense. During her career, she has handled local, state and federal administrative proceedings, and regulatory compliance issues for multi and single-family rental property owners.  She is licensed in Maryland and the District of Columbia.  She handles administrative appeals and Notices of Violations in the Office of Administrative Hearings, OAH Maryland Insurance Administration, MIA Department of the Environment, MDE and other agencies.  She frequently attends mediations, arranges insurance appraisals, and seeks to resolve her clients' disputes focusing on the potential cost savings available from alternative dispute resolution.  (ADR)

In 1981, Ms. Potthast graduated from Saint Michael’s College with a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Science. She then attended the University of Baltimore School of Law, where she earned her Juris Doctor and has since led a successful career spanning more than three decades in defense matters and as personal counsel to policyholders.

For her excellent work in insurance law, Baltimore magazine named her a Top Attorney in Maryland in 2021, and for her high ethical standards she holds the highest peer rating possible of AV Preeminent* from Martindale-Hubbell. Ms. Potthast is admitted to practice in the state of Maryland and the District of Columbia.

Ms. Potthast has published in both the GPSolo Magazine and the Lead Paint book chapter of the American Bar Association. At the beginning of her career, she worked as a trial attorney who defended general liability claims, product liability and medical malpractice cases for insurance companies in both federal and state courts, along with the Health Claims Arbitration Office. Her experience on both sides of the issue allows her to understand when negotiation is best or when a case is likely to be successful at trial.
