Pro bono/Community Service

  • I am a corporate member and volunteer counsel to Arisia, Inc., a nonprofit that puts on New England's largest and most diverse science fiction convention.  After a sexual abuse scandal in the fall of 2018, I joined the corporate membership and began working (with many others) on helping to revamp the organization's policies and procedures for handling misconduct allegations.  In 2019, I served as one of two laisons between the organization's Incident Response Team and The Watch (which handles more general safety issues around the convention).  I also assist the organization in obtaining and interpreting legal documents relevant to incidents they are investigating, and drafted a successful bylaws amendment to bring our procedures for expelling members in line with state law.

Verdicts/Settlements

  • Client's former student sought a restraining order against him, accusing him of rape.  I put together a cross-examination based on 3,000 pages of text messages exchanged between the two and persuaded the judge not to credit her testimony despite the very low bar in restraining order cases., 2019
  • Client's wife filed a restraining order, in the opening salvo of their divorce, alleging that he had forced her to engage in a variety of sexual acts.  I was able to review thousands of pages of online messages to show that she was a willing and enthusiastic participant in the acts she claimed to have been forced into.  As a result, the judge denied her application for a restraining order., 2019
  • Intellectually disabled client indicted for exchanging sexually explicit messages online with a minor.  After years of litigation, I was able to persaude the cout to find him not competent to stand trial, and then persaude the ADA to drop the charges based on his disabilities., 2018
