James Gardner Long, III

James Gardner Long III is a founding member of and an estate planning attorney at the Boston, Massachusetts, law firm of Long Hagan Huff-Harris, and he heads the litigation and administration division of the firm’s trusts and estates department. He was first admitted to practice in Massachusetts in 2013 and has efficaciously handled a number of matters in the state courts of New York and the federal courts of Massachusetts as well. 

Working closely with his clients and their families, Mr. Long makes sure everything is in order. Over his career spanning nearly a decade, he has represented high net worth individuals, business owners and golden agers in a variety of complicated matters, including estate and trust litigation, wills and trusts, health care powers of attorney, asset protection, contested and uncontested probate, business succession planning, fiduciary litigation, guardianships and conservatorships. He also has experience successfully handling civil and criminal appeals, and has turned back many trial court decisions.

Mr. Long is skilled in judging what cases are ripe for alternative dispute resolution, such as mediation or settlement negotiations. He understands that these methods can be beneficial in many ways – less expensive and faster than court litigation. He facilitates formal discussions to settle disputes between trustees and beneficiaries while keeping sensitive information confidential. Furthermore, he assists families to administer an estate after the death of a loved one.

A 2007 Bachelor of Arts graduate of the University of Georgia, Mr. Long received his Juris Doctor, summa cum laude, from Suffolk University Law School in 2013. During his law school, he served as the executive editor of Suffolk Transnational Law Review. He won the Suffolk International Moot Court Competition and has contributed as an author to many noted publications. 

Fluent in English and Japanese, Mr. Long is keen on staying involved in his community. He maintains active memberships in the Boston Bar Association, the Massachusetts Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity and the New York State Bar Association.
