William O. Monahan

William O. Monahan is the principal attorney at Monahan & Associates, P.C. Based in Boston, he handles complex civil litigation cases and provides representation to clients in the greater metropolitan area and throughout Massachusetts.

A significant portion of Mr. Monahan’s practice involves his representation of insurance companies. He defends them against claims from their policyholders, including allegations of bad faith and other coverage disputes, and he has handled these cases in bench and jury trial proceedings as well as at the appellate level. Mr. Monahan also defends liability insurance companies as well as their policyholders against claims that have been filed by third parties, including cases involving premises liability, motor vehicle accidents, toxic damage, animal bites, and fires.

Mr. Monahan’s insurance practice additionally encompasses subrogation issues, in which he assists his insurance company clients to lessen the impact of claims losses that they have incurred by seeking appropriate compensation from the parties that should bear responsibility. He has also handled a variety of general business litigation cases unrelated to insurance law, including contract disputes, and he has represented insurance adjusters who are facing professional negligence allegations.

Mr. Monahan majored in criminal justice and business at Northeastern University and received a Bachelor of Science in 1980. He then obtained his legal education at Suffolk Law School, graduating cum laude in 1984. Prior to entering private practice in 1986, he was an investigator and then, upon getting his law degree, an assistant district attorney with the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. Admitted to practice in both Massachusetts and Rhode Island, Mr. Monahan is also admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, the U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 1st Circuit, and the Supreme Court of the United States.
