Details
Managing partner at Ryan Faenza Carey and firm member since 2013, Kara J. Carey focuses her practice exclusively on family law matters including high net worth divorce, custody, child support, paternity matters, as well as prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, removal matters, and ADR. Attorney Carey has experience establishing or defending guardianships of minors, 209A restraining orders, and cases where the Department of Children and Families are involved. The firm is located in Walpole, Massachusetts, and she represents clients in the greater Boston metropolitan area and other cities and towns in the eastern part of the Commonwealth. Ryan Faenza Carey was selected as a Best Law Firm and Attorney Carey as a Best Lawyer in America by US News and Reports for 2023 as well as a Top Lawyer by Boston Magazine in 2022.
Since passing the bar in 2007, Attorney Carey is an active member in the family law field, on the Norfolk Bar Council and Norfolk Bench Bar. Further, she was a member of the 2020/2021 Child Support Task Force Committee in charge of reviewing and revising the MA Child Support Guidelines. Attorney Carey also presented to the Boston Bar Association regarding the new guidelines and was a coach for the Norfolk Bar conciliation training in 2022. In order to stay abreast of current developments in the field, Attorney Carey participates in several other professional organizations including the Massachusetts Bar Association, the Massachusetts Council on Family Mediation, the Bar Association of Norfolk County, the Greater Boston Family Law Inn of Courts and the Massachusetts Collaborative Law Council.
Ms. Carey has extensive experience in providing advice and counsel to people who are facing the prospect of divorce. Her background and training in mediation and collaborative law is often put to use when her clients want to avoid a protracted courtroom battle over such issues as child custody and visitation, the division of marital property, and child and spousal support. Although resolution oriented, Ms. Carey is a forceful advocate when litigation proves to be necessary and has tried several different family law cases.
In addition to her divorce practice, Ms. Carey handles a wide variety of other family law matters as well. She has prepared and reviewed prenuptial and post-marital agreements, and her caseload has also included paternity establishment and disputes. For many of her clients who are already divorced, she represents them in obtaining modifications to or the enforcement of existing support and parenting orders.
A 2002 recipient of a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from the College of the Holy Cross, Attorney Carey obtained her legal education at Northeastern University and obtained her Juris Doctor in 2007.
Ms. Carey is known amongst her peers and many in the family law bar for her annual efforts in organizing a Christmas drive for children in the custody of DCF. For more than 10 years she has partnered with the Department to have over children annually "adopted" for the holidays to ensure each child receives gifts on an annual basis, and in 2022 exceeded her goal of adopting over 400 children and ensuring every child in the program received a gift. Ms. Carey is an avid skier with her children and husband, and also the fall coach for 6th grade girls soccer.

- Kara is one of the best lawyers I know! The past 2 1/2 years were my toughest going through an unexpected divorce that included 4 year old twins. Kara was compassionate, thorough, went beyond my needs and fought for what was best for me and my children. She was always available when I needed her and if she was caught up with an emergency Julie her paralegal was there to assist! Both, Kara & Julie helped me throughout the whole process of my divorce which was emotionally and mentally draining but I overcame it because of them! Financially it’s a hard pill to swallow but if you want a lawyer who is going to be in your corner, listen to you, who is professional, smart and who knows the law then Kara is the person you want in your corner to represent you! I can’t thank her & Julie enough! The office itself is also pleasant, kind and welcoming!, 2022
- I had the privilege of working with Kara Carey & the rest of the RFC team during my divorce. Kara and her team displayed remarkable empathy and professionalism during what was an emotionally challenging process. Their legal expertise was unmatched, and their commitment to the work at hand resulted in an outcome that was amicable and without conflict. I am grateful to Kara & the RFC team and would recommend their services to anyone who has to travel the daunting path of divorce., 2023
- Kara Carey is an astute and compassionate attorney who understands the financial and emotional implications of a divorce with young children. She clearly explained MA law and calculations and successfully negotiated a fair agreement all parties could feel comfortable and confident with post-divorce. I appreciate that she was transparent with all legal fees and always felt her interests were soundly in helping me and my children to get to a better place. I recommend Kara as an excellent attorney with foresight, strong legal skills, and compassion., 2021
- I have had Kara Carey represent me, a Father in Massachusetts, on a custody case involving my daughter. Kara is extremely caring which is extremely rare as most lawyers just pretend. She was always available and I was awarded sole physical and legal custody of my daughter who went from a dangerous home where she was living, to being a 3.8 GPA student in University. I will always say that Kara helped me to save my daughters life. Forget the reviews about money and hours. This is what lawyers do period. Go with the one's that are human and have a pulse. Kara and everyone at RFC Legal is friendly and incredibly fair. If you are trying to do the best for your child in a divorce case, hire Kara. If you are trying to do the best for yourself in a divorce case, hire Kara., 2022
