Mariell R. Lehman
Top Rated Criminal Defense Attorney in Bloomfield Hills, MI
Mariell’s journey to becoming a top criminal defense trial lawyer started in an unlikely way.
Before going to law school, she thought about becoming a prosecutor. Justice seemed cut-and-dry: convict the guilty and put the bad guys away.
That all quickly changed when she saw the realities of the system. She learned that from the time someone is accused, they are already ten steps behind. It only gets worse after an arrest is made. Seeing that cases easily go forward on the word of a person alone – with absolutely no other evidence, like DNA, eyewitnesses, medical evidence, or any other corroborative evidence – confirmed to Mariell how the system is stacked against the accused. And seeing exonerations of the wrongfully convicted solidified even more that she’s truly working for justice in her cases as a criminal defense lawyer.
Within one month of becoming licensed, Mariell opened her own law firm and began her career as a criminal defense attorney. She focused much of her practice on finding creative outcomes for her clients that helped them avoid going to jail and prison. Mariell’s reputation quickly grew. She was known for her compassion towards those she represented and giving them a chance when all hope seemed lost. She began taking on high-stakes cases and was quickly recognized for dominating the courtroom.
Mariell also discovered that she loved being in court. To this day, she thrives on the adrenaline rush when she argues.
Her intuition connects her to the jurors deciding her client’s fate. And Mariell always knows that she has left no stone unturned – making her the most confident person in the courtroom, knowing the case better than anyone else.
And that, quite frankly, leads her to victory for her clients over and over again. Not surprisingly, Mariell has earned amazing wins including not guilty verdicts and dismissals. As the years passed on after her career took off in 2011, her reputation exploded. It is clear. Mariell is known for her dedication to her clients, integrity within the profession among colleagues, and for her victories. For Mariell personally, what matters most is that her clients get their lives back. Knowing that she can help someone go from the worst point in their life to a promising future keeps her going to this day.In 2019, Mariell’s reputation caught the attention of Shannon Smith. When Smith Lehman needed to find another attorney for the team – there was no other choice – and they refused to take no for an answer. Smith Lehman needed a lawyer who was unafraid to tackle cases with truly the absolute highest stakes – with consequences worse than some murder convictions – including people facing the rest of their lives in prison, mandatory minimum prison sentences of 25 years that can be stacked to equal hundreds of years, and sex offender registry for life – even for clients as young as 14 years old. From there, Mariell’s winning streak continued.Within months of joining the firm, Mariell obtained a verdict of not guilty in a murder defense trial — a difficult and daunting task. This was particularly true when the Police Commissioner announced Mariell’s client’s arrest in a press release saying that his county has “a very high, if not 100 percent, rate of arrest and conviction.” Well, Mariell certainly ruined that perfect record of convictions for him.
That is only one example of many where Mariell prevailed. She considers it a “huge honor” to work with each and every client she represents. It is also important to note – she doesn’t treat each client as a client — she treats each and every one as if they were her brother, her husband, her father, her loved one. That makes her dedication unparalleled to other lawyers and has led to her reputation as a top trial lawyer.

- Ms. Lehman obtained a Not Guilty jury verdict after a four-day jury trial in Macomb County. Her client was originally charged with First Degree Murder, after a trial a jury was unable to reach a verdict as to homicide but found her client guilty of gun charges. The prosecution reduced the charge to Second Degree Murder for the second trial and her client was, rightfully, found Not Guilty as the jury believed that her client acted in self defense.https://www.macombdaily.com/news/copscourts/man-acquitted-of-murder-in-warren-barbershop-shooting/article_f9227a78-ef66-11e9-89e3-a735179e64fb.html, 2019
