A criminal defense attorney with SBBL Law, PLLC, Matthew G. Borgula represents both businesses and individuals in grand jury investigations, criminal prosecutions and civil enforcement actions brought by federal or state agencies. During his career, he has defended clients against the United States Attorney's Office, FBI, SEC, HHS, ICE, HSI, ENRD, IRS, Public Integrity and many other federal and state investigatory agencies. He specializes in complex criminal defense litigation and trials, including defense against tax, healthcare, false claims, RICO, police practices and builders trust fund investigations.
Before joining the firm, Mr. Borgula had a long career as a seasoned trial attorney prosecuting and defending hundreds of both civil and criminal cases. He was Deputy Criminal Chief and a Lead Federal Prosecutor for the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Michigan. Mr. Borgula is admitted to practice in Michigan and federal district and circuit courts throughout the United States. In 2019, Mr. Borgula was inducted as a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers, an honor awarded to only the top 1% of trial attorneys in each of the 50 States.
In 1993, Mr. Borgula graduated from Northwestern University with a Bachelor of Arts in History, where he attended on a baseball scholarship. He then attended the University of Michigan Law School and graduated cum laude with his Juris Doctor in 1997.
