I have been an attorney in Grand Rapids, Michigan since 1985. My practice is in both State and Federal courts. I handle cases that range from simple collection matter to complex "business divorce" and corporate governance cases.
I am heavily involved in alternative dispute resolution. I am a neutral arbitrator with the American Arbitration Association and I am a trained facilitative mediator. I am also on the case evaluation panels for Kent, Barry and Ottawa (MI) counties. I have acted as an arbitrator, facilitator or case evaluator in over 500 cases.
From 2002 until 2021, I served as a member (and Chairperson) of the City of Grand Rapids Local Officers Compensation Commission. From 2007 until 2017, I was a member of the Michigan Civil Service Commission, serving as Chairman from 2011 - 2016. I have also done pro bono work for non-profit corporations and I enjoyed a stint on my children's school board.
I have been called as an expert witness in over 10 cases relating to the reasonableness of attorneys fees. I have been appointed the Receiver for a law firm that was being dissolved. I have secured several substantial verdicts for our clients.
I have never been the subject of any disciplinary action.
