Attorney Profile

Mr. Grix is a member in Dickinson Wright's Troy office.  With over 30 years of experience in the estate planning and administration area, he develops and implements enforceable estate plans for the management and transfer of assets during life and at death in ways that avoid unnecessary taxation, preserve privacy and protect loved ones.

Mr. Grix designs flexible estate plans to meet the demands of our volatile times.  Mr. Grix has advised families about the transfer of wealth to future generations using revocable and irrevocable trusts, limited liability companies, S corporations and other efficient, tax-favored instruments.

Working with firm clients and in cooperation with their other professional advisers, he drafts documents that take account of changes in our law and in our society.  For example, he has assisted clients both with early termination of trusts and with the extension of the term of a trust;  he has counseled clients about transferring assets from outmoded trusts into more suitable trust structures (“de-canting”);  and he has counseled clients about how to integrate their intentions for their loved ones with their charitable interests.

Mr. Grix also counsels individuals and corporate fiduciaries in the efficient and timely administration of the financial affairs of incapacitated individuals and, following a death, the administration of estates and trusts for the benefit of beneficiaries.

Mr. Grix received a B.A., with honors, and a J.D. from the University of Michigan.  He is a Fellow of the American College of Trust & Estate Counsel, a former Chair of the Probate and Estate Planning Council of the State Bar of Michigan and a member of the boards of various civic organizations.
