A 1993 graduate of the University of Michigan, Ms. Mellin obtained her Juris Doctor from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law in 1996. The State Bar of Michigan admitted her to practice the following year, and she is also admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan and the U.S. Supreme Court.

A leader in her field, Ms. Mellin has written extensively and conducted numerous lectures and seminars on various family law topics, and she has served as chair and vice-chair of the Oakland County Bar Association's Family Court Committee. She is also an active member of the State Bar of Michigan Family Law Section as well as the Michigan Inter-Professional Association. Furthermore, she is a former Master of the American Inns of Court, and she once served on the board of trustees for CARE House of Oakland County.
