Jennifer L. Thompson, the principal of JLT Law & Mediation in Litchfield, Minnesota, brings a wealth of competence and a deep commitment to child protection law. Since 2014, she has diligently represented both individuals and county agencies, focusing on areas such as:

  • Child protection
  • Parental defense
  • Foster parent counsel
  • Stepparent adoption
  • Third-party custody
  • Termination of parental rights (TPR) and child in need of protection or services (CHIPS) appeals

A dedicated volunteer, Ms. Thompson has served as guardian ad litem, receiving her training in this critical role in Ramsey and Hennepin counties through the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program. Her extensive professional training encompasses trauma-informed advocacy, Cornerhouse Forensic Interviewing Protocol, appellate practice, and advanced trial advocacy. She is also well-versed in a myriad of topics crucial to family welfare, including parental alienation, removal and reunification, accommodating parents with disabilities, juvenile justice, the Family First Prevention Services Act and many others.

An active contributor to continuing legal education, Ms. Thompson has moderated and led discussions on the intersection of child protection, juvenile corrections and mental health, as well as the impacts of vicarious trauma on legal professionals. Her insightful contributions were highlighted when she graced the cover of the April 2021 issue of Bar and Bench magazine, featuring her article “Competent but Compromised: Representing Clients on the Spectrum Between Mental Health and Mental Illness.”

Beyond her legal practice, Ms. Thompson actively contributes to the Children’s Justice Initiative across several Minnesota counties, has served as past and current chair and member of the Children and the Law Section of the Minnesota State Bar Association, and was an affiliate of the Warren E. Burger Inn of Court. As a trained family mediator and member of the National Association of Counsel for Children, she stands out as Minnesota’s first and only Child Welfare Law Specialist certified by the American Bar Association.

Ms. Thompson completed her undergraduate studies in health business at the University of Wisconsin-Superior in 2013 and earned her law degree from  William Mitchell College of Law in 2016. She was admitted to the Minnesota State Bar Association the same year and to the United States Supreme Court Bar in June 2023.
