A 1972 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Mr. Patterson obtained his Juris Doctor in 1981 from the University of Kansas School of Law, where he graduated Order of the Coif. He is licensed to practice before all Minnesota state courts as well as before the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th and Federal Circuits, and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Mr. Patterson is an active member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the Minnesota Intellectual Property Law Association and the American Bar Association, and he has written extensively and conducted lectures and seminars across the country on a variety of legal topics related to his practice areas.

Committed to those less fortunate and the promotion of innovation, Mr. Patterson helped establish the nation's first pro bono patent law program. He also currently serves as chair of the AIA Pro Bono Advisory Council (PBAC) as well as member of the Minnesota State Bar Association's Legal Assistance to the Disadvantaged Committee. Furthermore, he is heavily involved with the WIPO Inventor Assistance Program, and he also serves on the board of the United Inventors Association.
