Attorney Profile

For more than 15 years, John A. Klassen has practiced exclusively in the areas of employment and civil rights law from his Minneapolis, Minnesota, firm John A. Klassen, P.A. A stalwart defender of civil rights, Mr. Klassen compassionately represents victims of workplace harassment, discrimination and other civil rights violations. He provides aggressive representation for employees in wage and hour disputes and those involved in claims under whistleblower laws. He also regularly counsels employees about their severance and noncompete agreements and takes on sexual abuse cases as well.

Mr. Klassen received his undergraduate degree in international relations from the University of Minnesota before obtaining his Juris Doctor from Seattle University School of Law in 1993. He is admitted to practice in Minnesota as well as before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit and the state's U.S. District Court.

Mr. Klassen founded his firm in 1996 and has since garnered a sterling reputation in the community as an intelligent and efficient advocate for employees in the Twin Cities and greater metro area. His cases have caught the attention of international press as well, with pieces about his cases appearing in the New York Times, the Washington Post and the International Herald Tribune. His cases have also been featured on television and radio, including CNN and Minnesota Public Radio.

Mr. Klassen has obtained a number of million-dollar and landmark verdicts for his clients. He won a series of three related employment discrimination lawsuits that alleged claims of sexual harassment and retaliation against the Minneapolis Fire Department and its chief in 2006 and 2007. One of the cases turned out to be the first-known reverse discrimination case in the context of sexual orientation against the head of a large municipal department. As a direct result of Mr. Klassen’s efforts, Minnesota’s workplaces have substantially changed for the better.
