Attorney Profile

Joshua Newville, a Partner at Madia Law LLC, represents clients from throughout the state of Minnesota and the surrounding region from his office in Minneapolis. Mr. Newville works as a trial lawyer on cases that involve employment law, civil rights law, business law and constitutional law. His desire to defend plaintiffs from unfair actions extends also to victims of wage disputes, whistleblower retaliation, workplace discrimination, sexual harassment, employment contract disputes and police misconduct like excessive force and unreasonable searches.

Prior to law school, Mr. Newville attended the University of Minnesota, earning his Bachelor of Arts in 2009. He then went on to earn his law degree from the University of Minnesota Law School cum laude in 2012. Admitted to practice in Minnesota and Wisconsin, Mr. Newville is also admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota, the U.S. District Court for the Western and Eastern Districts of Wisconsin, the U.S. District Court for the District of North Dakota and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit.

As a tenacious litigator, Mr. Newville has frequently achieved his clients’ goals at trial and on appeal. Favorable trial verdicts, summary judgments and settlements have been gained for businesses and individuals. His defense of same-sex couples put him at the heart of the legal struggle for marriage equality. During his career, he acted as a lead attorney on two civil rights cases that became nationally recognized.

Mr. Newville continually pursues additional insights into his fields of practice through membership in the Minnesota State Bar Association, the State Bar of Wisconsin and the National Employment Lawyers Association. His dedication to LGBT rights earned him a place at the Minnesota Lavender Bar Association and The National LGBT Bar Association.

Comments

  • “Josh Newville is the lawyer we should all strive to be. He is a very rare individual. A genuine crusader--the kind of lawyer who will have books written about him someday. Only three years out of law school and he's already spearheaded and WON federal marriage equality cases in North and South Dakota. If you haven't heard of him, just "Google" his name to see his accomplishments. He is as passionate and optimistic about the law as we all should be, and he practices it as we all wish we could. No one deserves this more than he does, period.”
  • “Josh's young legal career is off to an amazing start. He was awarded The Equality and Justice Award by the MN Lavender Bar Association. This honor was bestowed on him because of his significant contributions to address equality and justice.”

These comments were made by fellow attorneys during the annual nomination process.
