Attorney Profile

Mark. L. Vavreck is the co-founder of Minneapolis-based Gonko & Vavreck PLLC. He protects the rights of consumers throughout Minnesota who have been the target of unlawful and predatory tactics by collection agencies, and he has handled more than 750 individual and class action claims arising under the federal Fair Debt Collections Practices Act. Other ways in which he assists consumers include assisting with disputes stemming from credit reporting practices under the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act. His fluency in Spanish enables him to help Spanish-speaking clients as well.

In addition to his consumer protection practice, Mr. Vavreck is experienced in plaintiff's personal injury and wrongful death litigation. He has also represented employees in cases involving harassment, discrimination and wrongful termination.

Prior to attending college, Mr. Vavreck spent four years on active duty as a sergeant with the United States Army. During that period, he studied Russian language at the Defense Language Institute. After leaving the military, Mr. Vavreck enrolled at the University of Minnesota, majoring in American studies and receiving a Bachelor of Arts in 1998. He then pursued his legal education at what was then known as William Mitchell College of Law and obtained his Juris Doctor in 2001. Admitted to practice in Minnesota, Mr. Vavreck is also admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota, the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Wisconsin, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit.

Considered an authority on the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act, Mr. Vavreck has delivered more than 20 presentations on that law at continuing legal education seminars around the state. He is active in a variety of legal and community groups, including the Hennepin County Bar Association and Dakota County Consumer Clinics.
