Robert A. Byrd is a managing partner at Byrd & Wiser Attorneys at Law, located in Biloxi, Mississippi. With a career in bankruptcy practice since 1980, he has successfully overseen numerous Chapter 11 reorganizations for a diverse group of clients, including farmers, contractors, family-owned businesses and significant entities in the hospitality and gaming industry.
A native of Highland Park, Michigan, Mr. Byrd earned his J.D. cum laude from Wayne State University Law School in 1977, after which he furthered his legal studies at the University of Warwick School of Law in Coventry, England. His academic achievements include being a member of the Wayne Law Review, co-authoring "Mississippi Collection Law and Practice" in 1986, serving as a teaching assistant under Professor Kevin Tierney for a contract law course at Wayne State University and fulfilling the role of law clerk for the Honorable Dan M. Russell Jr., the former chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi.
Before his law education, Mr. Byrd obtained his B.B.A from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan, in 1973. He is also admitted before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit and the U.S. District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of Mississippi. Additionally, he has held the position of general counsel for the Mississippi Coast Coliseum Commission for over three decades.
A former fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy and The Mississippi Bar Foundation, Inc., Mr. Byrd is an active member of the Harrison County Bar Association, The Mississippi Bar, the State Bar of Michigan, the American Bankruptcy Institute and the Mississippi Bankruptcy Conference. In February 2020, he was chosen by the U.S. Trustee - Region V to handle cases as a Trustee under the new Subchapter V of Title 11, the Small Business Reorganization Act of 2019.
In 2016, Mr. Byrd distinguished himself as the inaugural recipient of The Michelle Mendez Serviam Award from The Center for American and International Law (CAIL), a testament to his outstanding contributions to the bankruptcy law field in Mississippi. Furthermore, his knowledge has been showcased through his numerous speaking engagements at educational seminars hosted by prestigious organizations such as the Mississippi Bankruptcy Conference, CAIL, the Association of Insolvency & Restructuring Advisors (AIRA), the American Bankruptcy Institute and the Federal Bar Association of Michigan.
