Charles M. Merkel, Jr.

The managing member of Merkel & Cocke, P.A., Charles M. Merkel, Jr. has developed a superb reputation as a plaintiff's personal injury and wrongful death attorney. With offices in both Jackson and Clarksdale, Mississippi, he provides representation to clients throughout the state who have been harmed by the negligence of others. Mr. Merkel has extensive experience in cases arising out of medical malpractice, and he has been able to obtain many multimillion-dollar settlements and jury awards on behalf of his clients. Other areas that he has worked on include defective products, premises liability, and truck and other motor vehicle accidents. Mr. Merkel has tried more than 400 cases to verdict throughout his distinguished career.

In 1964, Mr. Merkel graduated from the University of Mississippi with a Bachelor of Arts magna cum laude. Remaining in Oxford, he then attended The University of Mississippi School of Law, where he graduated second in his class and was awarded his Juris Doctor magna cum laude in 1966. After graduation, Mr. Merkel joined the U.S. Department of Justice’s Tax Division under the Attorney General’s Honors Program. During his four-year tenure there, he tried tax refund cases in federal courts. While he was in the District of Columbia, he also obtained a Master of Law degree in taxation from Georgetown University Law Center.

Mr. Merkel returned to Mississippi in 1970 and entered private practice. He co-founded his current firm in 1982. Admitted to practice in Mississippi, Mr. Merkel is also admitted to practice before the U.S. District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of Mississippi, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit, the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, the U.S. Tax Court, and the Supreme Court of the United States. He has received an AV Preeminent* peer review rating through Martindale-Hubbell. Mr. Merkel is a member of the American Board Of trial Advocates, The American College Of Trial Lawyers, and The International Academy Of Trial Lawyers as well as The American Association for Justice.
