    Raised in Clarksdale, Mississippi, Mr. Barnes attended Mississippi State University in Clarksdale and received a Bachelor of Arts in 1968. Moving to Oxford, he enrolled at the University of Mississippi School of Law and was awarded his Juris Doctor in 1972. Mr. Barnes also holds an LL.M in taxation from the University of Florida Levin College of Law. He has delivered hundreds of presentations on topics related to his practice areas.

    • Over the course of his career he has tried over 40 cases in the United States Tax Court.  He has had 3 cases that have achieved national prominence; 1) JFM versus Commissioner.  This changed the way convenience stores and convenience store awnings were depreciated. 2) Bonnie I. Barge v. Commissioner.  This was the first case in the United States that valued a large fractional interest in an undivided tract of land.  The 100% fee simple interest was approximately 46,000 acres, and the Court used a discounted income stream to achieve a valuation of a 25% partial interest.  This is the first case of its kind.  3) His most recent case, Charlene Shurtz v. Commissioner, was a national test case instituted by the Internal Revenue Service to attempt to create estate tax at the death of a first spouse in what would otherwise be a non-taxable estate.
