Mr. Long attended the University of Kansas and earned a bachelor's degree in Journalism with highest distinction. He subsequently enrolled at the University of Kansas School of Law and was a member of the Kansas Law Review. He also served as managing editor of the Kansas Journal of Law and Public Policy, a publication he co-founded. After receiving his Juris Doctor in 1991, Mr. Long worked at Payne & Jones, Chtd. His first eponymous law firm, Long & Luder, P.A., opened in 1998.

Some representative cases of Mr. Long's include a suit filed against Kmart Corporation for injuries that occurred within a retail store. Another case involved a products liability suit over concrete that did not harden properly and did not meet required strengths.

Demonstrating a continued passion for education, Mr. Long has spoken at seminars and lectured law students on topics that include trial advocacy and tactics.
