James Coughenour, Jr.

James Coughenour Jr. is a partner at Rainboth, Coughenour & Lown, PA, based in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Serving clients across New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Maine, his practice focuses on workers’ compensation, personal injury and general litigation. While he regularly appears in courts throughout New Hampshire and Maine, he spends the majority of his time advocating for clients before the New Hampshire Department of Labor, delivering trusted representation across the Northern New England region.

Mr. Coughenour earned his Juris Doctor from the Massachusetts School of Law in 2011, following his undergraduate studies at the University of New Hampshire (UNH), where he graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in political science and justice studies. Admitted to the New Hampshire Bar in 2012, he expanded his federal and regional practice with admissions to the U.S. District Court for the District of New Hampshire in 2014 and Maine in 2015.

What sets Mr. Coughenour apart is the unique practical experience he gained early in his career. While completing his degree at UNH during the day, he attended the New Hampshire Police Academy at night, earning his law enforcement certificate in 2007. He subsequently served as an auxiliary police officer for the City of Portsmouth throughout his legal studies. This background in law enforcement gives him firsthand insight into investigative procedures, evidence gathering and courtroom testimony, an invaluable edge when navigating legal complexities for his clients.

In his personal injury practice, Mr. Coughenour combines relentless advocacy with deep empathy.
