Melinda Singer was selected for inclusion in the New Jersey Super Lawyers list for 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024. She also was recognized in 201 Magazine “Top Lawyer in Matrimonial and Family Law” in 2013 and 2018, and “Top Lawyer in Custody” in 2017.
Although her professional accomplishments extend to providing legal commentary for media sources such as NBC Universal Media, LLC, and FOX News Network, LLC, on divorce cases, attorney Melinda L. Singer is focused first on being accessible to her clients. She brings a unique sensitivity to the turmoil that surrounds Family Law and divorce, and is dedicated to limiting frustration for clients in Northern New Jersey. She is hands-on with her clients, whether they are facing a Domestic Violence Trial, a negotiated Property Settlement or a litigated Plenary Hearing.
Ms. Singer is Certified by the Supreme Court of New Jersey as a Matrimonial Law Attorney. She is admitted to practice law in New York, Colorado and New Jersey. She has also been admitted to the Supreme Court of the United States, as well as the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey.
She graduated in 1980 from Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University. Ms. Singer’s education also includes a Master of Arts in Public Affairs and Policy Analysis, where she received a full Fellowship and graduated summa cum laude. She also received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science, graduating cum laude, also at Stony Brook University.
Ms. Singer has been the Bergen County Matrimonial Early Settlement Panel #24 Chair since approximately 1989. She is a Member of Women Lawyers in Bergen, as well as the Committee Chair for Continuing Legal Education. She is also a Member of the New Jersey State Bar Association - Family Law Section, the Bergen County Bar Association - Family Law Committee, and the New Jersey Association for Justice - Family Law Section. Ms. Singer is a Court-Approved Mediator for Economic Aspects of Family Law cases, pursuant to R. 1:40. She is also a Court-Approved Mediator for Domestic Violence cases. She is also a Trained Collaborative Divorce Attorney since 2017.
Ms. Singer was appointed by the Supreme Court of New Jersey to be a Member of the Family Law Practice Committee for the 2015-2017 term, the 2017-2019 term, the 2019-2021 term, the 2021-2023 term and has been reappointed for the 2023-2025 term. She serves as the Co-Chair of Non-Dissolution/Domestic Violence Subcommittee. These committees review proposed changes to Family Law in their particular subject matter. She was appointed in 2014 by the Supreme Court of New Jersey to the Ad Hoc Committee on Law Firm Trade Names.
Ms. Singer has been a guest lecturer at the following Continuing Legal Education seminars: “Matrimonial Law – Handling High Conflict Divorce” (Meadowlands 2013), “Ethics – How to Control the High Conflict Client and Stay Within Ethical Boundaries and Child Support in High Income Families” (Boardwalk 2015), “The Top Ten Family Law Practice Tips” (Ramapo College 2016), “Advanced Family Law Navigating Cases: Investigation Through Trial with Use of Forensic Accountant” (myLawCLE 2017), “Ethics – Matrimonial Law” (Boardwalk 2017), "Ethics: Common Sense Principles All Attorneys Need to Know" (Meadowlands 2018), "Ethics: What Family Lawyers Must Do When Faced with Difficult Clients, Adversaries and Others" (Barry Croland Family Law Inn of Court 2019), and “Digital Forensics 101 & Family Law” (NJCLE 2019).
Ms. Singer is actively involved in her community and offers pro bono services to clients. She volunteers as a pro bono attorney for Northeast New Jersey Legal Services, providing representation for clients in Domestic Violence cases. Her sensitivity to emotional situations aided Ms. Singer in her role as a Member Attorney with Alternatives to Domestic Violence. She is also a Court-Approved Domestic Violence Family Law Economic Mediator.
Ms. Singer represented a client whose case was published relative to counsel fees in Domestic Violence cases, which has often been cited, namely Wine v. Quezada, 379 N.J.Super. 287 (Ch. Div. 2005). Another published case of Ms. Singer’s is Inserra v. Inserra, 260 N.J. Super. 71, (App. Div. 1992), which also involved the issue of counsel fees in Matrimonial cases.
Ms. Singer was formerly the Chair of the Supreme Court of New Jersey Ethics Committee, District IIB South Bergen County and served on the Committee for a period of four years. Ms. Singer has been Appointed by the Supreme Court of New Jersey as a Special Ethics Master in complex Ethics cases as the Trier-of-Fact.
She has extensive Trial experience involving Parenting Time, Custody, Child Support, Alimony, Equitable Distribution and other Family Law matters, including Domestic Violence.
