Alan L. Zegas, the visionary behind Zegas Law in Millburn, New Jersey, dedicates his practice to criminal defense and white collar crime. Serving the communities of Central and Northern New Jersey, he has garnered a reputation for navigating some of the state's most challenging cases with impressive results. His accolades include listings in The Best Lawyers in America and Who's Who in America, and he holds an esteemed AV Preeminent* peer-review rating through Martindale-Hubbell.
Mr. Zegas began his academic journey at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, earning his B.S. in 1974. He continued to hone his business acumen with an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School in 1978 before pursuing a J.D. with honors from Rutgers Law School in 1981.
Licensed in New Jersey in 1981 and New York in 1982, Mr. Zegas was admitted to the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit, the U.S. District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, and the U.S. Supreme Court. Mr. Zegas’ contributions extend beyond the courtroom as an adjunct faculty member at Rutgers Law School – Newark and a frequent lecturer for the Institute of Continuing Legal Education. A past president of the Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers of New Jersey and former chair of the Criminal Law Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association, he has also been a trustee for the New Jersey State Bar Association.
Among his notable courtroom victories, Mr. Zegas played a pivotal role in the Bridgegate case, securing a dismissal of all charges against his client. His legal prowess has also been instrumental in high-profile cases such as those involving Newark's former Mayor Sharpe James and the infamous "Glen Ridge" case. He has set precedents in sexual assault cases through his representation of Margaret Kelly Michaels and achieved acquittals in federal court for figures, including Victor Botnick and Peter Obi.
The New Jersey Supreme Court has repeatedly sought Mr. Zegas's insight on special committees, including those focused on evidence and criminal practice. His legal insights have captured the attention of major media outlets like The New York Times and Court TV, and he has shared his knowledge on "60 Minutes" and various national news platforms. As an author of numerous articles on trial and appellate practice, he continues to educate and inspire through his lectures on criminal law, federal practice and more for the Institute of Continuing Legal Education.
