Matthew J. Schiller represents clients in a wide range of transactional and litigation matters throughout New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and elsewhere throughout the country. His work includes the acquisition, disposition, leasing, and management of all kinds of commercial properties, including office, medical office, industrial, retail and multi-family developments. Matt also represents borrowers, lenders and special servicers in connection with loan workouts and modifications, loan sales, REO sales, as well as foreclosure litigation. Since the enactment of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, Matt has also developed significant experience concerning the formation and operation of Qualified Opportunity Funds and Qualified Opportunity Zone Businesses as well as the numerous real estate transactional, leasing and development issues associated therewith.
As the leader of the firm’s Leasing, Distressed Real Estate, and Opportunity Zone practice groups, Matt has substantial experience guiding his clients through complicated transactions, including some of the largest leasing and transactional matters in the country. Prior to joining MSW, Matt was the Vice-Chair of the Real Estate Department at Greenbaum Rowe Smith & Davis LLP.
Matt is a fellow with the American College of Real Estate Lawyers (ACREL), the premier organization of real estate lawyers in the country. Matt is the co-author of the Leasing Chapter of Commercial Real Estate Transactions in New Jersey (2019, 4th Edition), published by the New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education, a division of the New Jersey State Bar Association. Additionally, since 2012, Matt has served as member and officer of the Board of Consultors of the Real Property Trust and Estate Law Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association and recently served as the Chair of the section (2022-2023). Matt regularly participates as a moderator and lecturer for numerous programs for the New Jersey Institute of Continuing Legal Education, ACREL, and other continuing legal education providers on various aspects of commercial real estate transactions. In addition, Matt is a frequent contributor to a variety of publications, including Real Estate NJ.
Matt was named to the “New Leaders of the Bar” list by the New Jersey Law Journal and has been designated as both a Rising Star and a Super Lawyer in New Jersey Super Lawyers. Moreover, Matt is ranked by Chambers and Partners and has been repeatedly named to ROI-NJ’s Real Estate Influencers list.
Matt received his J.D. from Washington University in St. Louis, where he was the Associate Managing Editor of the Washington University Journal of Law & Policy, and received his B.A. from Trinity College (Hartford, CT) with honors and was the captain of Trinity’s varsity swimming team.
