Matthew Barceleau of New Mexico Legal Group in Albuquerque, New Mexico, is a dedicated advocate for clients facing some of life's most consequential legal challenges. His practice areas include family law, probate, DUI, domestic violence, wills and trusts, and custody and visitation. Today, he concentrates on divorce, family law, and contested probate and estate matters, handling everything from amicable, mediated divorces to high-conflict custody disputes, complex financial issues, and contested wills, trusts and inheritance claims. Through this work, he has sharpened his skills in negotiation, trial practice, and advocacy, and he has built strong working relationships with attorneys and judges across the state.
Born and raised in El Paso, Texas, Mr. Barceleau attended New Mexico State University, graduating in 2011 with a double major in government and criminal justice and a supplemental major in law and society. He earned his Juris Doctor from the University of New Mexico School of Law in 2015. During law school, he served on the Graduate and Professional Student Association Legislative Council and led the UNM chapter of the National Lawyers Guild and the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity. He also assisted low-income clients through the Community Lawyering clinic and represented wrongfully convicted individuals through the New Mexico Innocence and Justice Project.
Admitted to the State Bar of New Mexico in 2015, Mr. Barceleau began his career at the Second Judicial District Attorney's Office, prosecuting domestic violence, DWI and property crime cases. He represented the state in the mental health court program and served as the office's HEART prosecutor, focusing on repeat domestic violence offenders. He later worked in Las Cruces in insurance defense, governmental representation, civil rights defense, and commercial matters, and was admitted to the U.S. District Court for the District of New Mexico in 2017. Returning to the Albuquerque area, he represented individuals and small businesses in personal injury, contract, insurance and construction matters.
Raised in a working-class family of five, Mr. Barceleau learned the value of hard work and of enjoying life. He brings both to his practice, giving each case his full commitment, with the hope that every client can fully enjoy life once their matter concludes.
