John Teufel

John Teufel is Of Counsel at the law firm of Berkman Bottger Newman & Schein, LLP, located in New York – White Plains, New York City and Garden City and in Hackensack, New Jersey. He works out of the New York City office helping clients across the New York metro, offering them legal counsel on appellate matters, focusing exclusively on divorce and family law. 

After graduating magna cum laude from New York University with a B.A. in English, Mr. Teufel decided to pursue a legal career and joined Brooklyn Law School. While there, he was a member of the OUTLaws, an LGBTQ+ organization, and served as a fellow for Justice Deborah Kaplan in the Matrimonial Part of the state Supreme Court. He also worked as an intern for the LGBT Bar Association of Greater New York. Earning his Juris Doctor in 2014, he gained his license to practice in New York the following year. 

Well-versed in oral arguments, Mr. Teufel has excellent research and writing skills, which enable him to provide stalwart representation for his clients before Appellate Division panels. He has handled complex family law cases involving jurisdiction issues and enforcing prenuptial agreements across international borders. He frequently serves as a consulting attorney for legally complex family law matters at both the trial and appellate levels. 

Fond of sharing his legal knowledge, Mr. Teufel often writes on topics related to family law issues and these articles have been featured in the New York Law Journal, the Gotham Gazette and the New York Daily News. He is an active member of the National Lawyers Guild, the LGBT Bar Association of Greater New York and the family law section of the American Bar Association. He also provides pro bono legal services to media publications seeking access to government records, and has worked with the New York City Council to draft legislation concerning NYPD oversight.
