Pro bono/Community Service:

  • Lawrence served as pro bono counsel to a New York City block association in successfully limiting a zoning variance that a nightclub had been pursuing. The club subsequently brought suit against representatives of the block association. Lawrence succeeded in having the suit dismissed as Strategic Litigation Against Public Participation (SLAPP). The Court awarded sanctions against the club and in favor of the block association representatives. The Wall Street Journal and other publications reported the case. Lawrence also has provided pro bono legal services to a New York City elementary school.

  • The Copyright Law Journal featured a publishing case Lawrence argued in the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit where the panel upheld dismissal on the merits of plaintiff’s copyright ownership claim against Lawrence's client. The New York Law Journal and The New York Times reported on a 5-0 reversal Lawrence obtained in the Appellate Division, First Department, dismissing a $23.5 million claim against a condominium association and the nine members of its Board of Managers. The Law Journal also reported on a $3.5 million verdict Lawrence obtained following a four-week jury trial in an action alleging tortious interference in prospective business relations and libel where defendant’s actions had resulted in denial to Lawrence’s client of a multi-year senior management opportunity in the financial services industry. Lawrence also has obtained dismissals with prejudice of a federal securities class action and a substantial partnership dispute in each of which plaintiffs sought more than $50 million in damages. As part of court-annexed mediation, Lawrence negotiated a resolution that resulted in the value of his client's holdings increasing by more than $140 million.


  • Lawrence's transactional work has focused on mergers and acquisitions, distressed assets, hedge funds, private equity, venture capital, and information technology.
