Until 1973 he was a litigator with the law firm of Cahill, Gordon & Reindel where he practiced civil litigation and was a member of the team that represented The New York Times in the Pentagon Papers case working with Floyd Abrams.  For more than 30 years, Mr. Kurland has been a member of the faculty of the National Institute of Trial Advocacy and teaches as a member of the faculties of the intensive trial techniques programs at Hofstra and Cardozo Law Schools.  He is a past President of the New York University School of Law Alumni Association (2004 and 2005).  He is also on the Board of Directors of World Hunger Year (WHY), a not-for-profit founded by the late performer, Harry Chapin.  He is a member of the Board of Directors of The Landmark On Main Street, a not-for-profit theater in Port Washington, NY.  Mr. Kurland is a mediator in the New York State Supreme Court, New York County.  He is the former chair of the Committee on Recruitment of Lawyers of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York.
