As senior counsel for Carter Ledyard & Milburn LLP, Robert J.A. Zito has over three decades of experience and is the former chair of the firm’s financial institutions regulatory and enforcement group. Throughout his career, he has represented a variety of clients both big and small, from high net worth individuals to private business clients. He counsels with the firm on cases of litigation, disputes, international investigation and white collar defense.

At the School of Management at Marist College, Mr. Zito is also a full-time professor. He earned a Bachelor of Arts at Tulane University in 1978 before moving on to New York Law School, where he obtained a Juris Doctor in 1981. For his commitment to legal ethics and professional accomplishments, he is AV Preeminent peer-review rated, the highest rating,* through Martindale-Hubbell. In 2015, Mr. Zito was given the Servant of Justice Award by the Episcopal Diocese of New York.

Mr. Zito currently counsels clients in matters of fiduciary duties, governance, and internal controls and investigations. In federal and state courts, arbitration tribunals and private negotiations, his practice focuses on counseling and disputes shareholder rights, corporate governance, SEC and SRO enforcement, unfair competition, company valuations, and director, partner and officer fiduciary duties.

He has written pieces for publications such as Client Advisory, the New York Law Journal and Directors Monthly. An engaging and knowledgeable speaker, Mr. Zito has also presented at the New York State Bar Association’s meeting of the committee on securities regulation for the business law section and at the Meeting of the American Society of Corporate Securities and Governance Professionals in 2005.
