He has prevailed in trials or administrative hearings on charges involving sexual abuse on campus, child abuse, gun possession, and drug trafficking. In 2014, five years of litigation led to the release and exoneration of Antonio Yarbough, who had been wrongfully convicted for a triple homicide and falsely imprisoned for almost 22 years. Mr. Margulis-Ohnuma has obtained favorable outcomes in many federal cases by applying the Supreme Court's holding in U.S. v. Booker to obtain sentences well below the applicable sentencing guidelines. He has frequently reduced registration risk levels for clients in New York State Sex Offender Registration proceedings. Mr. Margulis-Ohnuma is an active member of the New York City Bar Association, where he sits on the Mass Incarceration Task Force and the Task Force on Sex Offender Registration. He is a life-member of both the New York State Association of Criminal Defense lawyers and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, where he previously served as vice-chair of the Sentencing Committee. He is also a member of the New York State Bar Association and the Federal Bar Council.

Mr. Margulis-Ohnuma has been a contributor to The Champion, published by the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He has presented at CLEs on federal sentencing and false confessions. He judges national moot court competitions and once coached a high school mock trial team.
