Attorney Profile

A partner at Goshen, New York-based Blustein, Shapiro, Frank & Barone, LLP, Richard J. Shapiro focuses his practice on various aspects of elder law as well as estate planning and administration. He is the only lawyer located in the surrounding region, consisting of Orange, Sullivan, Dutchess and Ulster counties, who has been certified as an elder law attorney by the National Elder Law Foundation. Admitted to practice in New York, Mr. Shapiro is also admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and before the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, and he heads the firm’s estate planning, probate and elder law department.

Mr. Shapiro provides advice and counsel to his senior clients and their family members on such matters as long-term care alternatives, including nursing homes and assisted living facilities, and he also helps them with Medicaid and Medicare planning issues. He has prepared and reviewed special needs trusts for those clients who, because of their physical or mental infirmities, are unable to handle their daily affairs.

In his estate planning and administration practice, Mr. Shapiro has extensive experience in the preparation of wills, revocable and irrevocable trusts, advance medical directives, and financial and health care powers of attorney, and he tailors each plan in accordance with the wishes and needs of each client. Mr. Shapiro also guides heirs and beneficiaries through what is often a lengthy and complicated probate process.
