Helene Bernstein is the esteemed founder of the Law and Mediation Office of Helene Bernstein, PLLC, located in the heart of Prospect Heights, New York, serving the downtown and Brownstone Brooklyn community. Since 1995, she has dedicated her practice to guiding clients through the complexities of family law. Her firm focuses on divorce, separation, custody, child support, domestic violence, child abuse, appeals, and the drafting of pre- and postnuptial agreements. Recognizing the diverse needs of her clientele, she offers flexible consultation options, including in-person and video chat services, to accommodate their schedules and preferences. Recently, Ms. Bernstein has extended her practice to offer parent coordination services in order to help high conflict families manage challenging issues without resorting to court intervention. Clients hire Ms. Bernstein to assist as a mediator, collaborative divorce attorney, consulting and review attorney, contested and uncontested divorce attorney, and family court and appeals attorney.
Ms. Bernstein's educational background includes a J.D. from Brooklyn Law School, awarded in 1987, and a B.A. with distinction in Political Science from SUNY-Binghamton in 1984. Her bar admissions include New York State in 1988, as well as the U.S. District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York in 1991. With a career marked by advocacy, dedication and a relentless pursuit of her clients' best interests, she stands out as a pillar of the legal community in Brooklyn and the NYC community.
Ms. Bernstein boasts a multifaceted legal proficiency, being adept as a mediator, collaborative attorney, and litigator. This versatility allows her to tailor her approach to suit the unique objectives of each client, striving to resolve disputes amicably through mediation or negotiated settlements, always with the child’s welfare as the primary concern. However, when circumstances necessitate court intervention, her prowess as a litigator comes to the forefront. Her legal career commenced with a role as a prosecutor for the Administration for Children's Services, followed by representing children in high-stakes custody battles. She is also a recognized member of the court-approved presumptive divorce mediation panels for Kings, New York and Bronx counties.
Ms. Bernstein's commitment to family law excellence is evident through her active participation in several prestigious organizations, including FamilyKind, Inc. (as a former board member), the Family and Divorce Mediation Council of Greater New York (where she serves as the Current President), the New York Council on Divorce Mediation (where she lectures various updates to the law and has served as the Brooklyn Mediation Peer Group leader for over a decade), and other family law organization. Her dedication extends to her role as a moderator for continuing education programs and her notable presence as the attorney of record in appellate cases within the First and Second Department Appellate Divisions.
