For over thirteen years, Irene has worked in both the private and public sector. Irene received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Fordham University in 2004 and her Juris Doctor from Hofstra University School of Law in 2007. She was admitted to practice in the State of New York, Second Judicial Department in 2008.
Currently, Irene is the principle of the Law Offices of Irene Angelakis, P.C. founded in 2015. Irene represents clients in matrimonial, child support, family offense, paternity, relocation, custody and visitation proceedings. Irene is also an Adjunct Professor at her alma mater, Hofstra University School of Law.
In addition to presenting at various academic institutions and teaching at Hofstra University School of Law, Irene has taught continuing legal education courses to colleagues such as “Ethical Considerations in Family Law Cases,” “Traumatic Exposure,” "Representing Victims of Domestic Abuse in Divorce Proceedings," “The Role of the Attorney for the Child” and "Avoiding Real Property Disputes in Divorce Matters in the Aftermath of Covid-19."
From 2019-2020 Irene served as the President of the Nassau County Women's Bar Association. She is presently a member of the Nassau County BAR Association, Hellenic Lawyers Association and is the a delegate to the Women's Bar Association of the State of New York on behalf of Nassau County Women’s Bar Association. Irene is the Co-Chair of the Mentoring Committee of the Nassau County Women’s BAR Association. Irene also does pro bono work for the Safe Center Long Island and is an Arbitrator for the Nassau County Supreme Court Fee Dispute Resolution Program. Irene is also a member of the New York Family Law American Inn of Court.
Prior to founding her firm, Irene represented clients in private practice and for five years she represented children as a Staff Attorney at the Children’s Law Center where she fiercely advocated for over two hundred clients in custody, visitation, paternity, neglect, termination of parental rights, family offense, substance abuse, and domestic violence proceedings. In that time, Irene successfully litigated cases involving complex issues of law and fact and was eventually promoted to “Senior Attorney.” During her time at the Children’s Law Center, Irene received extensive training and experience on children at the center of divorce proceedings and has a unique perspective on the critical impact that these proceedings have in the lives of children. Also during that time, Irene was an active member of several court based committees including the Family Court Domestic Violence Working Group, Child Protective Working Group, and the Disproportionate Minority Representation Working Group. She was also an active member of several internal committees at the Children’s Law Center during that time, including the Training Committee and the Legislation Working Group.
Irene has received many honors for her work including the Hofstra University School of Law: Outstanding Women in the Law Honor in 2020. Irene has been selected to Superlawyers Rising Stars every year since 2016. Irene was named "Top 40 under 40" from each year from 2017-2019 by the National Advocates. In 2015, she was named "Who's Who of Distinguished Alumni" by the Worldwide Association of Notable Alumni.
