Allan E. Mayefsky is managing partner and general counsel at Aronson Mayefsky & Sloan, LLP, in New York, New York. He concentrates his practice in matrimonial and family law, handling equitable distribution matters – particularly in high net worth disputes – complex financial discovery and valuation, support litigation, separation and prenuptial agreements, neutral evaluations and mediation.

A graduate of Harvard Law School, Mr. Mayefsky received his J.D., cum laude, in 1978 after earning a B.A., summa cum laude, in government and economics from Cornell University, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and belonged to Pi Lambda Phi. He is admitted to the New York State bar and to the U.S. District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, as well as the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the 2nd and 11th Circuits, reflecting a broad federal and state practice.

Within the family law community, Mr. Mayefsky has taken on prominent leadership roles, including a term as President of the New York Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and service as counsel to the AAML. His professional affiliations extend to the International Academy of Family Lawyers, the American College of Family Trial Lawyers, the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the New York State Bar Association – where he served on the Executive Committee of the Family Law Section – and the American Bar Association. He also served on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers Foundation and provided counsel to that organization.

Contributing to broader reform efforts, Mr. Mayefsky served on the Matrimonial Commission appointed by Chief Judge Judith S. Kaye; the Commission’s February 2006 report informed procedural improvements in both the Family Court and the Supreme Court. He has authored and presented on a range of practical topics, including valuation of enhanced earning capacity, use of tax returns in matrimonial actions, discovery and trial issues involving cash businesses, and approaches to unequal and high net worth equitable distribution.

Frequently called upon by tribunals, Mr. Mayefsky has been appointed by the New York State Supreme Court to conduct neutral evaluations and mediations aimed at settlement, and he has acted as discovery master in complex financial litigation. Drawing on more than 40 years of trial experience, he has tried and resolved some of New York’s largest equitable distribution cases. He has been peer-review rated AV Preeminent* through Martindale-Hubbell and rated “10.0” on Avvo.
