Barbara J. Schaffer

As the founder of Barbara J. Schaffer, Attorney at Law, Ms. Schaffer has spent decades helping families address family and matrimonial law issues such as divorce, fathers' rights, child support and child custody, as well as same-sex family law matters. She works with clients in the New York City area, including those in the five boroughs, Westchester, Suffolk and Nassau counties on Long Island.

As a trained mediator, Ms. Schaffer makes it a priority to help people find solutions in an amicable manner. She appreciates how upsetting these cases can be for everyone involved, which is why she strives to reach satisfying outcomes quickly and fairly. In some matters, going to court is inevitable. Even in litigation, Ms. Schaffer excels at navigating high-conflict problems.

Ms. Schaffer participates in a number of legal organizations in order to provide her clients with exceptional service. Through the New York State Bar Association, the New York Women's Bar Association and the New York County Lawyers' Association, she learns about new strategies and tools to strengthen her already formidable skill set. Prior to devoting her work to clients, Ms. Schaffer set her mind to excelling at school. She received a Bachelor of Arts in 1981 from Binghamton University, State University of New York. She then earned a Juris Doctor in 1985 from Brooklyn Law School, where she received the American Jurisprudence Award for receiving the highest grade in a class on evidence. Ms. Schaffer is a proud Adjunct Professor at the CUNY School of Law.

Ms. Schaffer is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States, the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit.
