Charles E. Schmidt

Serving from Kennedy Lillis Schmidt & English in New York, Charles E. Schmidt is a dedicated insurance attorney. He manages insurance coverage cases, coverage interpretation and litigation concerning policies on marine cargo, hull and other marine and nonmarine insurance policies. He also drafts and reviews policy wordings and endorsements, advises clients on general average matters and manages defense cases of air carriers and freight forwarders at trial and appellate courts. He is fluent in English, French and Spanish, providing his clients with a comfortable space.

Mr. Schmidt graduated from Boston College with a bachelor’s degree in romance language and literature before joining law school. He enrolled at Fordham University School of Law to hone his legal acumen and earned his Juris Doctor in 1975. He gained his license in 1976 to practice law in New York. He is further admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd, 6th and 9th Circuits and the U.S. District Court for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York.

During law school, Mr. Schmidt worked as a law clerk, gaining early exposure to the workings of the judiciary. He later joined a firm where he spent over a decade working on P&I defense. Now with around 50 years of experience, he is well-reputed and sought after for seminars and lectures. He has engaged in speaking at seminars on topics such as Office of Foreign Assets Control issues, subrogation questions, insurance coverage and issues of the Warsaw Convention treaty system.

In the legal sphere, Mr. Schmidt is an active member of the Maritime Law Association of the United States and has served on various committees. He presently serves as chair of the Special Committee for Meetups and Events. He is additionally a member of the Association of Average Adjusters.
