Details
A founding partner of Pitta & Baione LLP, Matthew J. Baione focuses his practice on the representation of victims of the 9/11 attack and their surviving family members who are seeking their rightful benefits from the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund that was reauthorized by Congress at the end of 2010 as part of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act. From the firm's main office in New York City, he assists clients throughout the greater metropolitan area and nationwide. Admitted to practice in New York since 2015, Mr. Baione is also admitted to practice in New Jersey as well as before the U.S. District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York.
Mr. Baione's clients have included first responders, people who were working at the World Trade Center or in the surrounding area, and others who were exposed to toxic dust after the towers collapsed. There are several conditions that must be met for victims to be eligible to receive compensation under the VCF, and Mr. Baione has been successful at appeals hearings in that regard. Some of his results have included an award in excess of $1.1 million for a disabled HVAC operating engineer suffering from pulmonary fibrosis, one for over $3 million for a financial executive who incurred breast cancer that later metastasized, and another in excess of $1.7 million for a court reporter who developed brain cancer.
Mr. Baione regularly meets with VCF staff members to discuss matters that are affecting his clients. A 2011 recipient of a Bachelor of Arts cum laude in social studies from St. John's University, he obtained his legal education at Yeshiva University's Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, where he served on the Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal before being awarded his Juris Doctor in 2014.
