Thomas M. Kretchmar

Thomas M. Kretchmar is a partner at Aronson Mayefsky & Sloan, LLP, in New York, New York. He handles matters across all areas of family law, both in and out of the courtroom. He is known for his strategic approach to litigation, combining calculated aggressiveness when necessary with a particular talent for identifying creative settlement solutions to disputes that appear to be at an impasse.

Before focusing his practice on family law, Mr. Kretchmar practiced private equity and hedge fund law. Prior to his legal career, he worked in finance and private client asset management. This extensive financial and transactional background provides him with a powerful and distinctive skill set for analyzing, valuing and negotiating complex financial portfolios and business interests in high net worth family law matters.

Mr. Kretchmar’s work as a family law attorney has drawn significant media attention. Mr. Kretchmar earned his Juris Doctor from Emory University School of Law, where he received the Henry Quillian Prize for outstanding achievement in contracts and commercial law. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania, earning a Bachelor of Arts and receiving the Elizabeth F. Flower Prize for the best undergraduate paper in philosophy.

Active in professional leadership, Mr. Kretchmar has served as a continuing legal education lecturer for the New York State Bar Association’s Family Law Section. He is a member of the section’s Executive Committee and serves as co-chair of its Social Media Committee.

Admitted to practice in New York and the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, Mr. Kretchmar is also deeply engaged in civic and cultural organizations, including the National Book Foundation, Housing Works Bookstore, Citymeals and the Philomathean Endowment Trust.
