Tim James

Tim James is a distinguished partner at Rabin Pfeffer and Partners LLP, located in the bustling heart of New York City. With a focus on matrimonial and family law, he has built a formidable reputation through his extensive litigation experience in New York’s trial and appellate courts. His competence spans a wide array of family law matters, including divorce, child custody and visitation – even in nontraditional family settings – equitable distribution of marital assets, spousal maintenance, orders of protection, adoption and international child abduction cases under the Hague Convention.

Mr. James’ academic journey began with a cum laude degree from Princeton University in 1978, followed by earning his Juris Doctor from the New York University School of Law in 1987. He was admitted to the New York State Bar Association in 1988. Over the years, he has contributed to the legal field by co-authoring numerous scholarly articles featured in the New York Law Journal’s annual “Special Matrimonial Law Section.”

A true consummate professional, Mr. James’ career trajectory includes five years as a litigator at a prominent New York City law firm, after which he transitioned to public service. He served as a senior legislative assistant to Representative Jerrold Nadler and later took on the role of Director of Government and Community Relations and Associate Counsel for the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation. From 1999 to 2005, he was the Court Attorney for Judge Debra Samuels, further honing his legal acumen.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Mr. James is deeply involved in his community. He chairs the White Plains Democratic City Committee and is an active member of the Executive Committee of the Westchester County Democratic Committee. His commitment to civic engagement is evident from his past roles, including serving on the Rye City Human Rights Commission, Manhattan Community Board 2 and the Board of Directors for the Lower Hudson Valley chapter of the New York Civil Liberties Union.

Additionally, Mr. James has been a member and chair of the board of trustees for the White Plains Public Library. He is also affiliated with several legal associations, including the New York State Bar Association, the New York City Bar Association, the Women’s Bar Association of New York and the New York County Lawyers Association.
