    Attorney Profile

Attorney Jim Siemens founded Siemens Family Law Group in Asheville, North Carolina. The Firm serves clients in Asheville and throughout Western North Carolina.  Jim presently devotes his practice exclusively to family law, and he has achieved considerable success assisting and guiding clients throughout the divorce process and helping navigate the other legal issues affecting their families.

Clients benefit from Jim’s extensive trial experience.  Jim has tried cases in most of the District and Superior Courts in Western North Carolina.  Jim has also tried cases in the Federal Western District of North Carolina.  Unlike most family law lawyers in North Carolina, Jim has tried cases to State and Federal juries and argued motions before State and Federal Judges.

Experience before the North Carolina Court of Appeals, the North Carolina Supreme Court, and the Federal 4th Circuit Court of Appeals also sets Jim apart from most family law lawyers.  Jim enjoys building his case at the trial level and defending it all the way to the Supreme Court of North Carolina.  Jim’s trial skills are matched by persuasive written briefs and oral argument.

Because Jim is a seasoned trial lawyer, he understands the benefit of controlling his case.  Mediation and alternative dispute resolution are always favored, with trial being the result when all other means of resolution have failed.  The mediation process is something Jim understands from the inside out.  Jim holds certifications as a Family Law Specialist and as a Family Financial Mediator and Superior Court Mediator.

Honored for his outstanding professionalism and service to his clients, Jim has earned an AV Preeminent peer review rating* from Martindale-Hubbell along with many other top rankings and endorsements from his peers, including The Best Lawyers in America** and Business North Carolina’s Legal Elite.  Jim has earned a 10 out of 10 “Superb” client rating on AVVO, supported by numerous positive testimonials and referrals from those he has served.

A 1989 graduate of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, Jim obtained his Juris Doctor in 1993 from Tulane University Law School. He is an active member of the American Bar Association, the North Carolina Bar Association, and the Family Law Section of the North Carolina Bar Association where he serves on numerous committees.  Jim is also a member of the North Carolina Advocates for Justice.  Locally, Jim is an active member of the Buncombe County Bar Association and a member of the Harry C. Martin Chapter of the American Inns of Court.

Jim’s interests outside the law are diverse.  Jim is creative and energetic, and his problem-solving skills have led him to service on boards including the Buncombe County Alternative Sentencing Program, Consider Haiti, and the Charlotte Street Business Association.  Jim has served as Senior Warden at Grace Episcopal Church and has been a member of the Disciplinary Committee of the Episcopal Diocese in Western North Carolina.  An avid cyclist, Jim races cyclocross each season for the Downtown Asheville Racing Club, winning the NC series in his category in 2017-2018.  Jim has restored three historic homes in Asheville, winning the Griffin Award for the adaptive reuse of the Patton Parker House in 2016.

Siemens Family Law Group proudly supports Blue Ridge Public Radio, Homeward Bound, Asheville Youth Cycling, Consider Haiti, Pisgah Legal Services, Buncombe County Bar Association, Aurora Home for Women Vets, League of Women Voters, Friends of Pack Library, Diana Wortham Theater, Charlotte Street Business Association, the Downtown Asheville Racing Club, Rainbow Community School, French Broad River Academy, and iDaph Events, among others.

Asheville, N.C. is home for Jim which he gratefully shares with his wife Deborah, his daughter Sophia and their three pets, Pekoe, Emma and Libby.
