A highly regarded civil litigation attorney, John D. Boutwell is a partner at Thurman, Wilson, Boutwell & Galvin P.A. Working out of the firm’s office in Charlotte, North Carolina, he represents people and businesses throughout Mecklenburg County and other parts of the greater metropolitan area. Mr. Boutwell attended Baylor University, where he was a member of the Gamma Beta Phi Society before obtaining a bachelor’s degree in 1990. He then went on to pursue his legal education at the University of North Carolina School of Law, and he served as the notes and comments editor of the North Carolina Law Review before being awarded his Juris Doctor in 1993.

Mr. Boutwell has extensive experience in a wide variety of civil trial matters, representing both plaintiffs and defendants, including construction defects, real estate disputes, partitions, boundary disputes, breach of contract cases and other types of business litigation. In his family law and divorce practice, he has represented both women and men whose marriages have irretrievably broken down and who now are in court on such issues as parenting rights, child and spousal support, and the division of complex marital assets and debts.  Mr. Boutwell also has extensive appellate experience with the N.C. Court of Appeals, N.C. Supreme Court, and the U.S. Fourth Circuit.

Mr. Boutwell has been admitted to practice in North Carolina since 1993, and he is also admitted to practice before the United States Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit. Mr. Boutwell currently serves on the North Carolina Bar Association's Litigation Council, and he is a former member of the North Carolina Bar Association’s Appellate Rules Committee.  He is also a member of several sections, including Family Law, Appellate Practice and Construction Law Sections, among others. Mr. Boutwell is also a member of the Mecklenburg County Bar Association.
