He served on the Governor's Crime Commission, the North Carolina Sentencing Commission, and the Governor's Juvenile Code Revision Committee. He is a valuable contributor to his community as well, continuing to serve on the board of directors of the Foundation YMCA of Wilson as president and on the Arts Council Endowment Committee. Among other organizations, he served on the 4-H and Youth Committee and on the boards of the Wilson Chamber of Commerce and Wilson County Habitat for Humanity. He is a founding member of Y.O.U.T.H. of Wilson County and Wilson Families in Action.
Additionally, Mr. Thomas serves as an adjunct instructor at Barton College, teaching Constitutional Law and criminal law, and is a former instructor at North Carolina Wesleyan College and at Juvenile Court Training for district court judges. He wrote and directed a script for the North Carolina Administrative Office of the Courts' juvenile law training film.
