Derek S. Welt

Derek S. Welt is an associate attorney at Funkhouser Law, a renowned criminal defense firm founded in Columbus, Ohio in 2000. He now manages the new Cincinnati office of Funkhouser Law.  He began his legal career after obtaining his bar license in 2019, and since then he has focused his legal practice on representing individuals who require criminal defense services. To date, he has assisted and provided his services to those accused of the following matters:

• Traffic violations
• Domestic violence
• Expungements
• Drug offenses
• Felony charges
• Sex crimes

A graduate of The Ohio State University, Mr. Welt majored in political science and obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in 2016. During his time at the university, he was a part of the university’s Ohio State’s Pre-Law study abroad program, and he had the opportunity to study at the University of Oxford’s St Anne’s College. Here, he was recognized and selected as one of the five students enrolled in the program with a promising future in law.

Right after finishing his undergraduate studies, Mr. Welt attended the Capital University Law School in Columbus. He was included in the dean’s list in the first and sophomore years for his exceptional academics and finally graduated cum laude earning his Juris Doctor in 2019. Focusing on gaining practical experience rather than only textbook knowledge, he served as an extern and intern in government offices and private legal firms, including Funkhouser Law.

Mr. Welt joined Funkhouser Law in his second year of law school as a law clerk, and since then, has been consistently working with the firm’s founder, Douglas A. Funkhouser, gaining valuable experience and on-the-job learning. After completing law school, he transitioned into the role of an associate attorney.
