John Gilroy is a founding partner of Gilroy Napoli Short Law Group and one of the most respected criminal defense attorneys in Oregon. Prior to starting the firm, John served for several years as a Deputy District Attorney at the Washington County District Attorney’s Office—one of the largest and busiest DA’s offices in the state. As a prosecutor, he handled a wide range of cases, from misdemeanors to complex felonies, gaining valuable trial experience and insight into how the government builds its case. That background now gives him a decisive edge in the courtroom.
Today, John focuses his practice on DUII defense, criminal defense, and major felonies. Recognized as one of the best criminal defense attorneys in Bend and Portland, he represents clients across Oregon in cases involving felony DUII, domestic violence, assault, drug crimes, and Measure 11 violent offenses. John’s ability to dismantle the prosecution’s strategy—often before charges are even filed—has earned him a reputation for delivering results in even the most difficult cases.
In 2014, John was honored with selection to The National Trial Lawyers: Top 100 Trial Lawyers, an invitation-only organization that recognizes the most qualified civil and criminal trial attorneys in each state. Members are chosen for their superior courtroom skills, leadership, and peer reputation.
John earned his B.S. in Political Science from Santa Clara University in 1993 and received his law degree from the University of Oregon School of Law in 1998. Before attending law school, he worked as a legislative aide in the Washington, D.C. office of Senator Robert Packwood, gaining early exposure to legal and policy issues at the federal level.
A lifelong Oregonian, John was born and raised in the Portland area and is the son of the late Hon. Patrick D. Gilroy, a longtime Clackamas County Circuit Court Judge. He is the youngest of seven children, several of whom also practice law in the Portland metro area. John and his wife are the proud parents of five children. When he's not in court, John enjoys golf, skiing, basketball, hiking, fishing, and camping with his family.
Known for his strategic thinking and trial experience, John Gilroy defends clients charged with DUII and serious felonies across Oregon with a focus on results, discretion, and integrity.
