Before graduating with her Juris Doctor from the University of Florida, Holland Law Center, Ms. Wood worked as a reporter for Florida newspapers affiliated with the New York Times where she covered the courts, government and police beats from 1975 to 1981. She worked for the Florida Office of the Public Defender in the 16th Judicial Circuit from 1982 to 1988. She started private practice in Eugene in 1988,  and gained recognition for obtaining the first "not guilty" verdict on a murder trial in that city in 20 years. She later defended a man on  parole for a double homicide against child sexual abuse charges, and won "not guilty" verdicts on all counts.

From 1992 to 1998, Ms. Wood focused much of her practice on death penalty litigation and learned the intricacies of the forensic sciences along with interrogation techniques and police investigation procedures. Since then, she has defended many individuals who were charged with state and federal  felonies, including complex, multi-defendant conspiracy cases involving mortgage fraud, tax evasion, government contract fraud, as well as artifact trafficking and drug trafficking cases.

Ms. Wood is admitted to practice in the Oregon State Bar, the U.S. District Court of Oregon and the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. She has lectured on criminal defense topics at the University of Oregon and legal seminars around the state. She belongs to a number of professional organizations, and has served as Vice President of the Oregon Criminal Defense Lawyers Association (OCDLA). She continues to serve as co-chair of the OCDLA Publications Committee, and as board Chairperson for Public Defender Services of Lane County, Inc.
