Whitney R. Anderson

Whitney R. Anderson is an attorney at the law firm Updegrove Law, Ltd., which has its offices in Middletown, Rhode Island. She focuses her practice on:

• Family law matters such as divorce, child custody, child support, qualified domestic relations orders (QDRO) and division of marital property 
• All criminal defense matters, including DUI and misdemeanors 
• Estate planning involving administration, trusts and wills, and probate law

Serving clients in all the cities and towns around Newport County, including the City of Newport, Middletown, Portsmouth, Jamestown, Tiverton and Little Compton, Ms. Anderson also represents clients in the neighboring counties, including Washington County Block Island, Charlestown Exeter, Hopkinton, Narragansett, North Kingstown, Richmond and so on.  

Ms. Anderson has a genuine concern for her clients’ needs and best interests, and she fights aggressively for their rights both inside and outside the courtroom. She helps them understand legal jargon and keeps them informed of every process in their legal case. 

With a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology, Ms. Anderson graduated from Fairfield University, where she served as a teaching intern for Statistics for Behavioral Life Sciences. She earned her Juris Doctor from the New York Law School, where she was a member of the Student Bar Association, Lawyers Without Borders and the New York Law School Coalition for the Homeless. 

Ms. Anderson attended the Family Law Trial Advocacy Program and graduated from the National Institute of Trial Advocacy. From 2016 to 2020, she was selected to be an Assistant City Solicitor for the City of Newport, where her responsibility included acting as a district court prosecutor for Newport with regard to criminal misdemeanor arrests. She has gained invaluable experience serving as a prosecutor in the district court as well as the municipal court. 

With a “Good” rating on Avvo, Ms. Anderson also received the Client Satisfaction Award by the American Institute of Family Law Attorneys in 2016. She is actively involved within the legal community and has memberships in the Rhode Island Bar Association’s Family Court Bench Bar Committee, Technology in the Practice Committee, and Ethics and Professionalism Committee. She is also a member of The Edward P. Gallogly Family Court Inn of Court.
