Stephen T. Fanning has built a reputation for tireless advocacy and integrity by representing his clients in Providence, Rhode Island, in a range of employment law matters. In his 30 years of practice, Mr. Fanning has successfully tried hundreds of cases involving a wide variety of workplace issues, including wrongful termination, discrimination, sexual harassment, unemployment appeals, wage and overtime disputes, severance reviews and negotiations, union negotiations and workers' compensation matters. He also tried the first case in the United States interpreting the Federal Family Medical Leave Act.
Prior to opening his own firm in 1994, Mr. Fanning was a trial attorney for the National Labor Relations Board, and he served as the assistant general counsel for the Massachusetts Board of Regents. He practices extensively in federal and state courts in Massachusetts and Rhode Island and before several employment-related forums in both states, including the Rhode Island Workers' Compensation Court, the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination, the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training, the Rhode Island Commission for Human Rights and the Social Security Administration. Mr. Fanning is also admitted before the U.S. District Courts for the Districts of Massachusetts and Rhode Island and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 1st Circuit.
In addition, Mr. Fanning is a seasoned arbitrator, having represented numerous labor organizations and individuals in arbitration involving collective bargaining and termination issues. He is the former editor of the Health Care Labor Manual, a publication focusing on labor and employment matters in the health care field, and he has served as an adjunct professor at several colleges and universities, teaching courses on labor and employment law.
