Gedney M. Howe IV

Gedney M. Howe IV is a Charleston personal injury lawyer who leads the Law Offices of Gedney M. Howe, IV, LLC, a plaintiffs’ firm that has fought for injured South Carolinians since 1937. A third-generation trial attorney, he took the helm of the family practice in 2025 and concentrates on catastrophic injury claims and complex civil litigation, including wrongful death, products liability, federal whistleblower and False Claims Act cases, civil rights litigation, and traumatic brain injury. He is admitted to practice in South Carolina, the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and the Supreme Court of the United States.

Since joining the bar in 2020, Mr. Howe has helped secure over $200 million in combined verdicts and settlements. His most notable results include participation in the $88 million Mother Emanuel AME Church settlement against the U.S. Department of Justice, the largest individual civil rights settlement in American history, a $63 million jury verdict against Dominion Energy in a workplace injury case, and a $10 million settlement for a client catastrophically hurt on a defective roller coaster in Myrtle Beach, and many more. He routinely takes on government agencies, Fortune 500 corporations, and institutional defendants that most firms will not challenge.

Before law school, Mr. Howe worked as a professional hunting guide in Michigan and New Zealand, an experience that sharpened the tenacity and preparation he now brings to every case. He earned his B.A. in Political Science from Winthrop University and his J.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law. Prior to joining the firm, he clerked for Senator Richard A. Harpootlian, P.A., and served at the insurance defense firm Hall Booth Smith, P.C., giving him firsthand insight into how defendants and their insurers evaluate claims.

Mr. Howe has been recognized as a Super Lawyers Rising Star every year from 2023 through 2026, was named Young Lawyer of the Year by the Charleston County Bar Association, and received the Star of the Quarter award from the South Carolina Bar Young Lawyers Division. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the Federal Bar Association, the South Carolina Association for Justice, and the American Association for Justice. His office is located in a restored historic firehouse on Chalmers Street in downtown Charleston, where he offers free consultations to individuals and families dealing with serious injuries caused by negligence, defective products, or institutional misconduct.
