He pursued his legal education at the University of South Carolina School of Law, earning his J.D. in 1977. 

Since then, Mr. Spears has been authorized to practice in all South Carolina state courts, the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina, the United States Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit and the Supreme Court of the United States. Additionally, he completed his Education for Ministry at The University of the South in 2002.
