Working the third shift in the cotton mills of South Carolina’s Upstate shaped Tom’s desire to help working people. He knows first-hand the impact a workplace accident can have on the worker and their family. He focuses on helping his clients get the best medical care so they can return to work. He strives to maximize his clients’ recovery because he knows there are no second chances once a settlement has been made. Tom wants the best for his clients and is focused on making sure they are protected for other benefits and the future.

As an example, Tom recently successfully handled a case for a hotel maintenance worker who was lifting laundry scales during his shift and had a devastating accident. As a result of the injury to his back and spine, and surgery for the injury that did not go well, the worker was paralyzed and is now a paraplegic. The case turned on two factors: the client’s desire to seek treatment beyond what the workers’ compensation carrier was offering, and for his wife to care for him, full-time at home, instead of hiring part-time home health workers, which also have been controlled by the workers’ compensation carrier. Thanks to Tom, the client received a confidential settlement of $3.2 million in special damagers for future medical care from the employer’s insurance carrier.

After he graduated from the University of Virginia with distinction, Tom studied to become a lawyer at the South Carolina School of Law in 1977. He graduated at the top of his class and was admitted to the South Carolina Bar in 1978. He began his law career as a public defender and joined the Steinberg Law Firm in 1980. He is a member of the Charleston County Bar Association, South Carolina Bar Association, and South Carolina Trial Lawyers Association. For the past 20 years, Tom has been listed in Best Lawyers in America and Super Lawyers for Workers’ Compensation. Thanks to his solid reputation for effective legal work on behalf of workers injured on the job, other lawyers refer business to Tom because they know he will take good care of their clients.

Tom has served on the Charleston County Common Pleas Liaison Committee and the Charleston County Grievance Committee. He is a former municipal judge in Goose Creek and a member of the South Carolina Workers’ Compensation Claimants’ Association.

Tom lives in Charleston with his wife and has three children and three grandchildren.

  • Attorney Thomas White of Steinberg Law Firm Obtains $3.2 Million on Behalf of Paralyzed Client in Recent South Carolina Workers’ Compensation Case In July of this year, Charleston personal injury attorney Thomas White of Steinberg Law Firm and Peter David Brown helped secure a settlement award of $3.2 million in a South Carolina workers’ compensation case. The settlement represents a major victory for the injured worker, who was left paralyzed after a workplace accident. The facts surrounding the accident were tragic. Back in 2018, while at work, the employee attempted to lift a scale used to weigh guests’ outgoing laundry. As the worker lifted the scale with the help of a coworker, he injured his back and spine. The man immediately went to the hospital, where Emergency Room doctors told him that he would need immediate surgery. The procedure did not go well, and the worker was left paralyzed from the waist down as a result. After the accident, the man filed a South Carolina workers’ compensation claim. These claims are filed against the employer’s workers’ compensation insurance carrier, who is ultimately responsible for resolving the claim. Two issues arose in negotiating the worker’s compensation award. First, the injured worker wanted his wife to provide him with the in-home care that he needed, rather than have a part-time home healthcare worker. Second, the man hoped for medical benefits beyond what the workers’ compensation insurer was willing to provide. As attorney White explained, his client “is 46 and has a lifetime of medical care that he wanted to direct, rather than be directed by the workers’ compensation carrier, who controls everything.” The $3.2 million settlement allows the injured worker to obtain the care he needs and enables his wife to provide the care. Since the settlement, the injured worker is doing much better. He explained that he is glad the process is over and that he no longer has to deal with the workers’ compensation system. While the details of the settlement are confidential, according to the agreement between the parties, the total award amount was $3.2 million. This includes $2.35 in special damages, intended to cover the man’s future medical care needs.  , 2020
