Details
Sloan Ellis, a former federal prosecutor, is a distinguished partner at Ellis Hinton, LLC, based in Greenville, South Carolina. His practice is dedicated to representing individuals and businesses across various legal areas involving criminal, civil and personal injury law. With substantial experience in both federal and state courts throughout South Carolina, he is committed to delivering exceptional outcomes for his clients through relentless dedication and a robust work ethic.
After receiving his B.S. degree from Presbyterian College in 2005, Mr. Ellis earned his J.D. from Charleston School of Law in 2008. He was admitted to the South Carolina Bar that same year. Before joining the private sector, he devoted nearly a decade to public service as a federal and state prosecutor. During this period, he handled thousands of cases, addressing complex legal issues ranging from federal white collar crimes, such as wire fraud and money laundering, to organized crime, drug offenses and violent crimes.
Mr. Ellis’ tenure as a federal prosecutor saw him collaborate closely with numerous federal and state law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Internal Revenue Service, the United States Department of Homeland Security, the United States Postal Inspection Service, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the South Carolina Department of Revenue, to tackle a variety of crimes, mainly white collar and violent offenses and drug-related cases.
Notably, Mr. Ellis was pivotal in prosecuting the fiftieth individual in the United States charged with fraud related to the Paycheck Protection Program under the CARES Act. His exemplary work in prosecution earned him the prestigious 2020 United States Attorney’s Award for Excellence.
Prior to his federal service, Mr. Ellis spent nearly three years in private practice, representing businesses and individuals like his current role at Ellis Hinton, LLC. His journey in public service began at the 13th Judicial Circuit Solicitor's Office – County of Greenville, South Carolina, where he prosecuted a wide array of state cases, from murder and armed robbery to drug-related and white collar crimes.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Ellis worked under William W. Wilkins, the former chief judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit and chair of the United States Sentencing Commission at a South Carolina-based law firm. He also gained significant experience in white collar criminal defense while working with former United States attorney E. Bart Daniel in Charleston, South Carolina. During this time, he was part of the trial team in a landmark month-long trial, which was part of the largest and most complex white collar investigation in the history of South Carolina.
Beyond his professional commitments, Mr. Ellis functions on the board of directors for the Meyer Center for Special Children, contributes as a member of The First Presbyterian Church and is involved with The Haynsworth-Perry American Inn of Court. Moreover, he boasts a “Superb” score on Avvo and holds an AV Preeminent* peer-review rating through Martindale-Hubbell.
